The standard response to feeling exposed at night is one very bright fixture on a bracket. It feels like the right answer. It mostly is not. Motion sensors, used well and used badly
Sensors are worth having in one or two places. Used well, they handle a spot where always on light would be a waste. Set too sensitive, they become background noise, which is worse than not having them. The reliable base is consistent illumination, and sensors on top of it, not instead of it.
Aiming, and being a good neighbor
Light that spills next door is the fastest way to a difficult conversation. Light that goes past the fence is wasted twice. Proper aiming, shielded fixtures and putting the source where the beam stays on your ground handle it without dimming anything. It is part of doing it properly. Light that stays where it was aimed works harder, because none of it is spilling into a yard nobody paid to illuminate.
Cameras are only as good as the light
A camera only captures available light, and in the dark that is not much. Even coverage is what makes footage usable. One harsh source overwhelms the sensor in one area and leaves the rest unreadable. Which means the lighting advice does not change: moderate, even, no hard edges.One more note: leaving everything on all night is not the goal either. A dusk to late evening schedule covers the hours that matter to most households, with a reduced level after that.
