Why LED and nothing else
Anything mounted permanently on a roof edge has to survive being there. That rules out the bulbs that go in a tub in January. LEDs generate almost no heat and have nothing fragile inside, which is the whole reason a permanent system is possible.You do not have to follow the technical side to make a good decision. But it is worth asking what the channel is, how it mounts and how it is wired, because the answer tells you how carefully somebody works. The people who can walk you through it are usually the ones who install it carefully.
What the track does
Each diode sits in an aluminum track, rather than clipped along an edge. That channel hides the hardware and aims the output. It gets matched to the color of your trim or fascia as part of the order, so the daytime house does not change.
Individual diodes, not a strip
Each LED in the run is addressed on its own. Without individual control you get one color across every foot of the run. With it, sections can differ. Most nights nobody uses any of that, which is not a criticism.Ask to see the daytime look of a completed job, since darkness flatters every install and daylight flatters only the careful ones.
The rest of the system
The parts you never look at are the wiring, the power feed and the controller. Wire routing is where careful work shows, because a rushed job leaves it visible. Ask where the wire goes and where the controller mounts before the install, not after.
What it means that it never comes down
The upside of never taking it down comes with an obligation: it has to be installed well the first time. A system installed properly asks very little of you. A sloppy install becomes visible the moment the lights are off. That is why who installs it is not a detail.
Weather is what the hardware is up against
Permanent hardware takes whatever the year brings. Summer heat builds up along a sunlit fascia, and heat is the enemy of anything with a circuit in it. Humidity is constant here, which is why connections

Dimming
The output is not one level. Full brightness is a holiday setting, and it is far more light than an ordinary evening wants. Most people settle at a fraction of full output, because a soft glow reads as designed and a bright one reads as decorated.
